"Inclusions"
This is a photograph I took as the sun dove into the water on the island of Mallorca in Spain. It reminds me that inclusion is a gathering together of all that we see, some of which we might be tempted to label and exclude. What a great word - it also describes bubbles trapped in ice and stretching a bit, I can imagine, light embedded in darkness!

Background- Mexican Amate paper. Exploring a traditional binder (rabbit skin glue, the "stock")
Ingredients - 3 soil based pigments, water, fire, ground glass, a top coat of white opaque chalk paint and finally some black sumi ink. Eyes can see so little of a painting.
At the beginning of every adventure there is uncertainty. Then hard work. In the end, uncertainty!
I am beginning a masters program at Yale next week. I have ideas and plans. I hope to allow them to be upended by this amazing school full of mystery seekers and intellectuals.
Fearful and fearless together!

"Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in."
~ Leonard Cohen~ Anthem 1992
Life has been busy - lots of cracks and lots of light.
Grateful for my little and large loving families.

"One in a study of traditional handmade binders, pigments and resins"
8" x 10"
handmade cotton paper, rabbit skin glue, red ochre, green earth, iron oxide, indigo, chalk, mastic resin, water and fire
Beginning with formulas and studied craft, I surrender to the interplay of materials and smile at what emerges.
Playing without purpose is humbling. It reveals what cannot be imagined.

The moon is an internal guide. Yin. Cold and moist; a womb, a nesting space before birth; a light in the dark sky.
"There is nothing you can see that is not a flower; there is nothing you can think that is not the moon."
~ Matsuo Bashō 1949
